NEW SELECTIONS FOR 2011
Black velvet petunia — Annual in pure black, trailing habit. Use as an accent with white, yellow or red.
Phantom petunia-- Go Boilers!! A stunning black and gold striped petunia with a training habit. Great to send to the IU fans. Stand alone color or accent with white or red for an explosion of color. Watch for these on the front fence along US 20 at the Angola store.
Pinstripe petunia—Annual in black and violet stripe colors. A great stand alone petunia.
Gerbera Daisy—Landscape series in carmine, dark pink, and scarlet colors for 2011. The plant is 3 times the size of a normal gerbera daisy when mature. Flowers are huge on long stems and excellent for cut flowers or just left in the landscape.
Sunpatiens—Sun loving, aggressive New Guinea impatiens. This is the second year for them. Some new colors added this year. They were not a great seller in 2010. Did any of you try them? I landscaped with some at Clear Lake and they performed very well. Please e-mail comments.
Mecordonia (gold dust) —Proven Winners new addition this year. Early flowering with excellent heat tolerance. Tiny, profuse yellow flowers May through October on fine green foliage. Moderately vigorous and should not be mixed with vigorous plants or they will be buried.
Astrantia (star of billions)—Perennial that flowers all summer long. A modern variety of one of the oldest cottage garden plants, producing airy plants topped with glossy green and white blooms.
Ligularia (little rocket) –Perennial with 40” tall racemes of bright yellow, wispy petaled flowers. Plant in sun to part shade, in moist soils.
Echinacea (Irresistible)—Perennial Echinacea with orange-red flowers on dark green foliage. Plant in full sun in borders, prairie gardens or wildflower meadows.
Rodgersia piñata(roger’s flower)—plant in part shade, excellent with hosta. 24” bright pink blooms on bronze tinged foliage.
Begonia (sherbert bon-bon) - Annual with unique double blooms in brilliant yellow on red stems. Use in baskets or window boxes in partial to full shade.
Biggie Begonia—Introduced these to my Clear Lake landscape customers last year in shade to full-sun locations. They performed very well. They call them Biggie because they will triple the size of a standard fibrous begonia and are very floriforus. Use them alone or accent a perennial bed where you need summer long color and height to 18”. Colors this year are dark leaf with red flower, dark leaf with pink flower and green leaf with red flower. These begonias are tough and will flourish in irrigated or non-irrigated beds and have good heat tolerance.
